Celebrating National Polar Bear Day

What is white, lives in the north pole, sleepy, cuddly, incredibly large, and has a whole day dedicated to its name? Why, a Polar Bear, of course.

The Polar Bear:

As you probably have seen in a million pictures before, the polar bear seems to be covered in white fur. This stark white fur is probably what earned them the nickname “White Bear”. But few people know that the polar bear’s fur is not really white but translucent. Their translucent fur makes them look like they’re either white or cream-colored. This translucent fur is actually what camouflages them from any of their natural enemies. It is also what makes them such excellent predators. Their prey wouldn’t be able to distinguish their large forms from the heaps of snow.

The natural habitat of the polar bear is the arctic. You can find some of them in Alaska, Greenland, Canada, Russia, and Norway. Although now, you can now see a live polar bear any time you want by visiting the zoo.

It has really queer sleeping habits. Polar bears sleep mostly at night although it isn’t really easy to distinguish night from day in the arctic. The reason behind this is that their natural prey, the seal, is most active during night time. To be able to hunt more seals, they have to adjust to the seal’s sleeping patterns. The weirdest thing about polar bears however is their intense love for taking naps. They nap after their meals, they nap when they are doing nothing, they’d probably nap while they sleep if only they could.

Polar bears are said to be the largest carnivores on earth. They can grow up to nine feet tall when they stand. The largest polar bear ever recorded was a whole eleven feet tall. They would’ve been the heaviest were it not for the grizzly bear. The thick level of blubber that they have which insulates them or keeps them warm even in the coldest places accounts for their weight as well as their cuddliness.

National Polar Bear Day:

The Polar Bear is perhaps the cuddliest animal in the world. Just the sight of it is enough to elicit a million oohs and aahs from people. And who can blame them? Who can resist the natural charm of these adorable creatures? Who can resist their gentle and sleepy eyes? Who can resist their snow white fur which really does feel as soft as it looks to be? Nobody can! It’s impossible to have the tiniest inkling of dislike for these creatures because they are simply so lovable. They are so incredibly cute that they really do deserve to have their own special day.

There is still no conclusive evidence about where or who this National Polar Bear Day actually originated from. But whoever invented this was surely a genius. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your bags and head for the zoo this twenty seventh of February and pay your homage to the cuddliest, cutest, most adorable creature on earth – the Polar Bear.
