Laughing Out Loud with Chris Rock
Comedy skits, movies, television sitcoms…you name it, Chris Rock made it. This multi talented man who hails from South Carolina has made a name for himself in the entertainment world. His unique and highly creative performances in front of a camera or on stage have opened millions of doors for Fellow African-Americans who want to make it big in the entertainment industry.
Chris Rock was born on February 7, 1966 in Andrews, South Carolina. Their family later moved to New York and settled in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, where he spent his growing years. He is currently married to Malaak Compton since 1996 and they have two daughters named Lola Simone and Zahra Savannah.
The Rise to Recognition:
Chris Rock gained popularity by doing standup comedy performances in various nightclubs in the mid-80’s. He also did little bits of acting in movies like New Jack City and I’m Gonna Git You, Sucka. His talent paid off when one night, Eddie Murphy happened to watch his act at a nightclub and saw how incredibly funny and witty his jokes are. Eddie Murphy immediately endorsed him to Saturday Night Live or SNL.
By 1990, Chris Rock joined the cast of SNL, where his character Nat X gained a vast following and lent him national exposure. He also makes standup comedies on the side. He stayed for three years at SNL and was later let go by the sketch comedy show after a regular cast turnover. By then, Chris Rock was known by the whole nation. After SNL, Chris Rock transferred to another sketch show called In Living Color. The show did not go well, so he decided to concentrate instead more on doing standup comedy.
Chris Rock released his first comedy album called Born Suspect in 1991. Rock talks about life as an African American man and relationships in general. His jokes can sometimes be sarcastic, lewd and racist, but he gets away with it for being funny and witty at the same time. His jokes hit the spot, as they say. In 1993, he starred on his first HBO comedy special film entitled Bad Ass Jokes. Chris Rock starred in various movies such as Dogma, Nurse Betty, Lethal Weapon 4 and Beverly Hills Ninja.
The Bring the Pain standup special released in 1996 further established Chris Rock as one of the most talked-about comedians in the nation. He followed this with two more HBO films called Bigger and Blacker in 1999 and Never Scared in 2004. These two films immediately brought him acclaims from Time and Entertainment Weekly, which named him the Funniest Man in America. He later starred in his own show called The Chris Rock Show, where he interviewed politicians, celebrities and the like. This won him three Emmy Awards and 15 nominations for best performance and script writing.
Chris Rock is currently an executive producer of a highly popular comedy show based on his childhood called Everybody hates Chris. Chris Rock truly made his mark in the Entertainment World.
