International Talk Like a Pirate Day began in 1995 as an inside joke between John Baur and Mark Summers when they proclaimed September 19 as the day when everyone should talk like pirates.

TLAPD really set sail when Baur and Summers wrote to humor columnist Dave Barry about the silly holiday in 2002.

Some basic Pirate talk

Ahoy! - "Hello!"
Avast! - Stop and give attention. Check that out!
Aye! - Hearty agreement
Aye aye! - Yes sir right away sir!
Arrr! - Preferred to arrgh, arr can mean nearly anything. Yes, no, bummer, wow, rats, oh no, my you are a clver one...etc.
Beauty, me beauty, lass, lassie, wench - refer to women.
grog - drink
Bilge Rat - lowly person insult
lubber - land lubber - a non pirate talking individual
smartly - quickly
