Inventor’s Day: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

The Inventor’s Day was created to remind us of our debt of gratitude to the inventors of the present and the past who have served to make mankind’s existence a lot easier. Without the perseverance and determination of these inventors, most everyday objects such as the television, the computer, cell phones, and shopping carts would not have become a reality. Without inventors to blaze new paths for development, mankind would’ve found it hard to get to where it is today.

Inventors’ Hell
Inventors of the past, however, were not given much support by the society in which they lived in. They were oftentimes ridiculed or viewed as eccentrics. Their ideas were deemed irrelevant, foolish and unnecessary and people did not realize that it is from these ideas and inventions that greater inventions and ideas could spring forth. Because of this, investors were almost always not given the support they needed to fully realize their visions.

Inventors’ Role
The first steam engine for example was not widely known to society during its first appearance; its inventor was not given much support. However, with subsequent refinements and applications of technology, the steam engine brought about the industrial revolution that has changed the face of the world and its history. The first telephone and computer, on the other hand, were probably limited in application and use but these brought about further advancements in technology responsible for the information age and the global internet.

Inventor’s Day
These inventions served as the stepping stones for today’s technological achievements and with better support to the inventors of the past, our world would have been much better today. Inventor’s Day serves to remind us of humanity’s past mistakes and encourages us to change the way we treat inventors.

Inventor’s Day serves to remind us of the importance and relevance of the inventors of today to our future generations. It tells us of our obligation as a society to heed and value these people. Inventors should and always be supported, respected and recognized by the society they serve. Furthermore, inventors of the past who were not acknowledged by society should be remembered and given due respect as their works served as the stepping stones for bigger and better inventions that we are benefiting from today.

Inventor’s Day Worldwide
Inventor’s Day is celebrated in countries throughout the world. Dia del Inventor for example is celebrated in Argentina every September 29 to commemorate the birthday of Laszlo Jozsef Biro who is the inventor of the ballpoint pen. Tag der Erfinder on the other hand is celebrated in Germany, Austria and Switzerland every November 9 to celebrate the birthday of the Hollywood actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr who was responsible for the development of the Frequency hopped spread spectrum which found use in cell phone telecommunication technology. The United States of America also celebrates its own Inventor’s Day every February 11 which is the birthday of one of its most famous inventors, Thomas Alva Edison, who was responsible for the development of the modern light bulb.

In remembering and being grateful for the investors of the past and giving support and respect to our inventors of today, our future will definitely be a lot better and brighter.
