America's physicians are honored every March 30th, Doctor's Day.  The red carnation is the official flower of Doctor's Day.  The holiday has been observed since 1933 in commemoration of the first use of ether during surgery.  Dr. Crawford Long pioneered the technique in 1842 after noticing individuals at "ether parties" felt no pain.  A tumor was removed from a mans neck while he was under the influence of ether.
