Election Day in the United States is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
On Election Day polls open to elect public officials. The U.S. Constitution requires in Article One that Presidential elections must occur on a single day throughout the country. Congressional and other elections can be held at different times, however they mostly occur also on election day. Congress chose "the first Tuesday after the first Monday" in November was chosen to avoid having the day fall on November 1, All Saints' Day.
