Veterans Day is observed November 11, the date Armistice was signed
after World War I. The holiday honors all U.S. Veterans.
November 11, 1918 Armistice was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans. After four years of battle World War I was ended. This day of rejoicing saw the laying down of arms, celebrations in the streets, businesses closed, bells rang, whistles were blown, and impromptu parades occurred.
Following World War II, the holiday became Veterans Day, honoring those Americans who died in wars. Veterans Day has evolved to now primarily honoring living veterans whether they served in the military during wartime or peacetime.
British Nations also observe the occasion on November 11, as Remembrance Day.
