School Bullies - Japan

Back

Feb 1996
"A lot of children crack up under the pressure and there are a lot of negative things that happen like bullying."

The Hiranos' son committed suicide after he was bullied at a new school. The school authorities made no comment. Satoru Ikeda, teacher, thinks that many students have lost their identity because of a harsh education system in Japan which does not tolerate individuality. Rosalind Brown, English teacher, was shocked by the sight of young children wearing only a pair of shorts. Even in cold weather the children stand in the playground in rows and rub each other's back to keep warm. If children walk around from February to November with a bare belly they win a certificate. Inside the class room they stand and recite English phrases in unison. To get into a better high school and a good university, children also attend evening classes. They enjoy themselves afterwards by going to McDonalds for a coke and doing their homework together. Noriko Nagasaki opposes the education system and says that most parents are afraid to protest in case it affects their children's' exam results.

A huge problem is accountability. For the school to admit any responsibility in the suicide of the boy would bring great shame to it and its staff. No one in a society that places such a great deal on individual accountability and maintaining one's honor in the face of society would want to bring that shame on themselves. It's easier for it not to be their fault. So, no one takes responsibility and the problem worsens and people make threatening calls to the parents of the dead victimized child.

this 7:33 is ridiculous. those kids aren't old enough to make these choices, it's pretty much torture/hazing of little kids.

i'm aware of that much but that doesn't explain how she turns from being all sweet to a total heartless bitch. in the earlier chapters she wasn't nice to the not-so-popular crowd but she was at least nice to her friends and ayumu (as long as they sided with her unquestionably). but in end of the latest volume she even threatens her follows and friends now. it's a complete 180 and there's not enough explanation for this transformation

she was pissed b/c ayumu was accused of stealing her bf, and her bf lied to her, but i thought the ending was kinda unfinished

... I don't doubt this as truth for a minute. I know this is what it was like there and still is. Individualism is a hindrance to the Japanese way of life. It's very militaristic. It teaches you from an early age that if you cannot work for society the way it wants you, you'll be psychologically and even physiologically hammered until you follow in row along with everyone.

japan is one of the most racist country. they don't want foreignors and they don't want western ideas to hinder their japanese mindset.

stay the fuck away from the country!
if u choose to stay. do not complain or cry about your racial experiences u had in japan.

u'll be less hurt if u go there with that mindset than ignorantly going there thinking japanese are not racist.

yeah i know that manga. it is pretty good but it lacks a backstory for the villian. it should explain why she's so heartless and how she turned that way. then it'd be a great example to schools and parents as to the affects of japan's strict rules and society.

what is this organization in japan that fights bullying? i want to join! if i were that lady i'd refuse to leave until i saw the principal! i'd even handcuff myself to the office door! i know the pains of being bullied and what it's like going through it alone with no friends or any one else to turn to. i don't think anyone should have to go through that. these people have the power to change that and yet they turn their backs. i refuse to accept that.
